Ready to set out into the woods to get your buck? Well then gather up your gear and get started because today, you're going to learn how to set up your hunting spot during the rut to bring that big buck in.

What you'll need:

  • Bow & Arrows
  • Range Finder
  • Bincoulars
  • Grunt Call
  • Rattle Bag
  • Scents: Doe Estrus, Buck Urine, Doe Urine, and Scent Away Scent Blocker
  • Tink's Scent Bomb
  • Blind/Treestand

First, pick a spot that creates a natural pinch point and where you know deer are traveling. You should do this before you plan to go out hunting. Check your trail cameras, or look for sign such as scrapes, rubs, deer trails, etc. If you think you've got a good spot, climb up the tree using your portable climber, set up your blind and blend it in, (Need help? Check out my Assembling & Disassembling The Ameristep Doghouse Blind) or create your own spot on the ground.

Next, make a mock scrape. Find a small tree or sapling with low leaves. Kick back the dirt in front of it and make a scrape. You have 2 options of what you can do next. You want to put either buck urine (to act like another buck is coming onto his territory), or doe estrus in the scrape (to act like a doe is visiting his area). Or you could make 2 mock scrapes and put one in each. If you see scrapes that a buck has already made, spray estrus in them. He will be back to check them.

On the morning of the hunt, spray yourself very well with scent blocker. Deer can smell you a long way away, especially if the wind is not in your favor. When you get to the bush and start walking in, spray your boots with doe estrus to create a natural scent blocker, plus create a doe estrus trail. It would be like a doe walked that path, not you.

Once you get close to your stand, get out your Tinks scent bomb. You will be hanging this up in a tree to have the scent blow to that buck. Trust me, this works. I just had a buck this past season come flying up the woods and stop right at my scent bomb. Make sure you hang it in a spot that you have a shooting lane, otherwise the buck will come up and you won't be able to shoot.

At first light you can start using your grunt and rattle bag. Grunt every 15 minutes or so. A buck during the rut can cover alot of ground in 15 minutes, so you want to catch him before he goes out of ear shot. I usually rattle every 30 minutes. Grunting is a natural form of communication, so it can be done more often. Buck fights don't occur as much, so spread the rattling out a little more.

Also at first light, make sure you get your rangefinders out and start figuring out distances on certain trees. This will help if a big buck comes in because if you know the distance that tree is, you won't have have that extra movement of using the range finders.

Wait for that buck to come in and then he's all yours! These ideas have been proven, as my boyfriend, brother, and I have all used them successfully. Good luck!
